This Week in History: October 28, 1962
At MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, I had just lit the barbecue grill when my phone rang. "Gunny, meet me at the office" ordered Maj. Bob Morrisey . Ten minutes later he and I were huddling with an op plan calling for the 4th Marines to immediately standby for immediate deployment to Key West, FL for possible involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis. We immediately alerted SSgt. Al Steele, Sgt. Jim DiBernardo and SSgt. Phil Phillips to report by midnight ready to launch with phot

Norm Hatch in The Washington Post
By Paul Farhi, February 21, 2013 The Washington Post The battle had raged for four days, and would continue for 31 more, a marathon of sand and heat and unrelenting death. But at that moment there was an order from the brass: Get a bigger flag up there. The small American flag fluttering atop Mount Suribachi, the volcanic peak on the island, was too small to be seen by the troops fighting below. From his makeshift command post near a captured Japanese airstrip, a 24-year-ol

I found this amongst the memorbalia of my deceased Father in Law, Colonel Robert L. A Family Of CCs
(Ed. Note: We learned two things recently: One, old timers do come back to us and, when they do, it can be gangbusters! The second thing we learned was there were Woman Marine combat correspondents in World War II, at least one we now know of. In an email, former CC Crane Davis notified us he was making a contribution to the Denig Memorial Fund and wanted to know if we could list it in memory of his Mom and Dad, both CCs during that war. While space is limited on the le

Who Was This BrigGen. Robert L. Denig Sr.?
"Where in Hell Do We Put Them?" Line infantrymen were completely puzzled with these particular Marines. "Where the hell do we put them?" "What can they do for us?" or "Doesn't HQMC realize we're fighting a war?" "Hell, they'll only get in the way!" Fortunately, this attitude didn’t last long and soon one heard: "Where are our combat correspondents?" "What's the delay? Get them here!" General Denig and staff got much satisfaction from this change in attitudes. Back at the
