Lifetime member Chas Henry's latest contribution to preserving the Marine Corps story is Fuji Fire: Sifting Ashes of a Forgotten U.S. Marine Corps Tragedy

The book, released on June 1, 2025, is based on his exhaustive four-year investigation across two continents into the 1979 typhoon, fuel spill, and fire at Camp Fuji, Japan—widely regarded as one of the Corps’ worst peacetime disasters. Through powerful accounts of heartbreak, courage, and resilience, Fuji Fire offers new insight into the tragedy’s causes and lasting consequences, reflecting an enduring commitment to informing the public and deepening understanding of the Marine Corps.
A retired Marine who was combat-decorated for actions in the 1991 Gulf War, Chas Henry rose from private to captain during his service. In 2026, he was presented the USMCCCA’s Brigadier General Robert L. Denig, Sr. Memorial Distinguished Service Award—and named by the group Military Veterans in Journalism as one of the year’s Top 10 Veterans in Journalism.
