fifty-six years ago, as I photo/caption chief at Fleet Home Town News Center, I had the problem of deep sixing hundreds of “grip & grin” photos from the fleet & the Corps. Seems that editors wanted to know which was the recipient. A shot of the general’s (or whatever) ear and near full face of the recipient. The Naval Photographic Center was one of the biggest offenders. I hoped that photo folks might have learned. All we need in this shot instead of the window is crossed flags and photo of the CMC, President and Commanding General. A quick story. The ops. section, 1stMAW, Iwakuni, 1959 had staff NCO reenlist & sworn by Col. Ken Walsh, MOH. Loved the colonel, so grabbed a 4×5 and went myself. Flags, photos, etc. framed by grip & grin. Asked the colonel move for decent hometown photo. He refused. I walked out. Maj. Ray Pett got a call (aviator w/several ISO trips). Asked what I (acting GySgt) had done. Told him. Was asked to come back & do it my way. OORAH!
